FAIR TRADE FEDERATION PRINCIPLES 1.

   Posted by: admin   in

Federation members fully commit to the following principles: 1. Create Opportunities for Economically and Socially Marginalized Producers Fair Trade is a strategy for poverty alleviation and sustainable development. Members create social and economic opportunities through trading partnerships with marginalized producers. Members place the interests of producers and their communities as the primary concern of their enterprise.

Here is Fair Trade Principle Number One:

“The interests of producers and their communities as the primary concern of their enterprise.”

Notwithstanding two up-close and personal inspections recently,
Renice Jones does not “get it” that her craftsworker suppliers are
impoverished people: and that their primary concern is to get food.
Global Crafts did not promote Artcamp’s jewelry.

Global Crafts acted as if it expected this jewelry to sell itself.

She seems to want to phase them out and so she uses her buying power and her monopoly position to keep the worker’s price at a very low level.
Eventually, the artisans depleted their stocks
of casting alloy, abalone shell, and lapidary stone.
In 2017 – Global Crafts did NO special promotion of Artcamp’s jewelry,
no investment in the group, no new tools, no training or safety equipment; even though these craftswomen are her trusted suppliers of 9 years (perfect delivery record and no unresolved quality issues):
Instead of promoting their jewelry as if she really wanted to sell it, Global Crafts cooperated with other Fair Trade dealers, seemingly
to keep these mexican craftswomen out of the Fair Trade market.
I do NOT think that one could fairly state that Global Crafts has
had the interests of the producer at the heart of their business in
this case. The Fair Trade Federation should apply Principle Number 1.
The GMails back and forth between Global Craft and Artcamp
the past nine years tell the story: the interests of the artisan group were demoted, rather than advanced by this company. The producer group is made to serve the interests of the Fair Trade dealer; the exact opposite of the text of Fair Trade Principle #1
The closer anybody would examine the GMail record,
the more indeliably one see the pattern of exploitation.
I hope and pray that reason and justice prevail will prevail and that
the Fair Trade Federation order Global Crafts to pay what they owe,
like they should, and to pay the woman for the work her brother did.
Global Crafts was walking away from them, not sharing their planning.

That unwarned-of 35% drop in orders in 2017 was doubly destructive to the social fabric of the cooperative society, because everyone was caught unaware when the agreement to purchase 5000usd$/month was unilaterally recinded without explanation by in January of 2017.

The new cooperative president, Emi formally asked Renice Jones, Global Crafts owner, on December 20th – 30th, 2016, in a series of emails, if there were any way the service or the quality of the cooperative might be improved for the coming year. Emi wrote Renice that she had been taught the importance of  communication with the customer
in the business school training she had received from the government
at the time she got a grant to buy her sewing machines.

But Renice only answered her: “No. Everything is fine”.

So, Emi reported this at the year-end members-meeting
i.e. that the customer confirms that everything is just fine.

Two weeks later, the surprise production-order-cut came,
included a seemingly self-consciously-phrased warning:
“you are lucky to have an order this month” (paraphrased).

This January 2017 Global Craft’s production-order broke a two year covenant of a $5000usd/month minimum order.

These artisans never got any raise in prices, obviously, the prices were always going up for items they need to buy.

In January 2017, the price of everything in Mexico went up 25%
(look up “Gasolinazo” in Wikipedia) The artisans need income.

They thought they could hold on to their precious jobs
by performing perfectly with regard to quality and deliver.

Taking their work away from them is just not right,
because Global Crafts monopolizes the Fair Trade market.

The artisans can’t speak for themselves nor defend their own interests, thats why the Fair Trade company customer might be expected to take an interest in the well-being of this community
(after having sold a million dollars worth of Artcamp’s product.)

“Members place the interests of producers and their communities as the primary concern of their enterprise.”

Hello?

Global Crafts practices violated
Fair Trade Principle Number One

I hope Fair Trade Federation will protect the village artisans from the worst practices of dealers, that act will be sincerely appreciated, and reciprocated with good will.

For the record, both Kevin and Renice are good people. They are blind to the needs of the craftspeople and if they knew more, they wouldn’t have made the decisions they did. I believe they are both decent human beings and that,
in a way, this is a misunderstanding, one that, if handled constructively, could have a healthy outcome for Fair Trade.
