FAIR TRADE FEDERATION Sra. Ann Ferguson
100 W. 10th Street, Suite 604 Wilmington, De 1981

Good afternoon Ms. Ann Ferguson Fair Trade Federation

My family works with leather, we are three generations of leather craftworkers.
My grandfather was the first tanner in Taxco. I have inherited the tools of my father and I carry on his tradition as artisan.

I was born with the restlessness to acquire knowledge and to have new tools. I attended training given by the government for business development, the government agency INAES granted me a loan: I bought some sewing machines to complement my dad’s tools. I paid the credit back in full and I amin good standing  with INAIS, They always invite me to their functions.

In 2015, these village women thought that I, a craftswoman from the city, could help them obtain a government support .  At that time, they told me they would include my leather accessories in their mosaic stone work in the products offered to their principle customer.

They did not know how to access to these government production credits and that is why they sought me out in my work place in Taxco. At that time, we had coincidences, as our parents had inherited us special knowledge, the artisans who cut and shape the stone and abalone shell and the artisans who work the silver and metal sheet; they worked at home, in the same way as me, we talked about what we could do with the tools we have.

I am from the provincial city of Taxco. The women of the cooperative are all from villages. Guerrero  state is very economically depressed, so the government gives loans at zero interest rates, something I took advantage of once, to acquire tools for my craft work.

The ladies of the cooperative thought of me as someone who could help them with accountants and government officials, and at the same time combine leather with their handcrafted stone mosaic jewelry. They sought me out, invited me to be in their cooperative; they thought they could take advantage my knowledge and contacts and they became excited about coming out with new and abalone shell mosaic fashion sandals..

Videos from when I became the legal representative of the cooperative society of Artcamp.

However, the principle customer Renice of Global Crafts was always unfriendly to me.
She almost did not answer me, when I reminded her that we offer a guarantee of all our jewelry she coldly ignored me I don’t  know why. She made little threats from time to time.

The craftswomen had told me that by agreement their fair trade distributor (Renice Jones) was very good to them with an agreement to purchase at least 5000usd $ / month. That was part of what convinced me to accept being part of this cooperative and then as their legal representative. I thought at the time they enjoyed a stable business. Ask anybody in this village and that person knows about this 5000usd$/month purchase covenant.

For my part, I always hoped Artcamp would integrate my leather accessories product with their jewelry , but without warning or explanation Renice’s orders suddenly dropped in January 2017 . In 2017, Artcamp’s Global Craft orders dropped 36%. She never does a promotion. She says things that make me think she might be a racist. Meanwhile, these village craftswomen are holding me responsible for their loss of income and employment.

When some women lost their jobs, they accused me of giving their work to my brother.
I have heard this in the form of rumor. Of course, I have never taken any such advantage of my position. Some accuse me of embezzling the cooperative because the payments were not enough to include everyone. All the payments of Ms Renice went directly to the other craftswomen (not me) so I have not even had the opportunity to embezzle the cooperative. The women who lost their household income in January 2017 seem to think Renice is made out of gold, and that I am a thief. I am very hopeful that you will help me Ms. Ferguson. These craftswomen are unfairly accusing me and have no choice, I have to defend myself.

Additionally, this year, Mrs. Renice insisted that we make for her very complicated stone mosaic double earring samples, without giving us any payment, nor did she make an order for these pieces. It’s not right to make artisans create original models then forget about it.

  1. A simple accounting of the Artcamp-Global Crafts transactions to clarify false charges against me of embezzlement. I need to prove that all of Renice’s payments went directly to the craftswomen, that no money of hers was ever in my hands. And 2. I hope you will make Renice to pay for those stone mosaic double earring styles she ordered.

Ms. Ann, I don’t know you, still I appeal to your goodwill and your sense of fairness, I hope this formal complaint has a positive consequence. I will be your loyal friend afterwards.

Good afternoon Sra. Ann Ferguson Fair Trade Federation.

Emi Estrada, legal representative of Artesanas Campesinas cooperative of Guerrero, México

Sra. Ann Ferguson

D I R E C T O R A

Buenas tardes Sra.

Sra. Ann Ferguson Federación de Justo Comercio.

Emi Estrada, Artesanas Campesinas de Guerrero México.
